Västernorrland is strategically located in the middle of Sweden. It has several airports, deep-water ports and high-speed rail options for fast communication and nordic logistics/transport.

Natural resources such as forests and water attract related companies, competence and knowledge to the county. Beside sectors such as energy, forestry, processing, metals and manufacturing, government agencies, banks, insurance companies and service suppliers also contribute to a dynamic and international business climate. IT, telecom, media and music are also important business areas. Two universities attract some 15,000 students.

Västernorrland’s 246,000 inhabitants live in seven municipalities where the northerly climate enhances the beauty of the seasons and, winter or summer, the majestic landscape offers many recreational options. Investment costs for setting up a business, hiring staff or buying/renting industrial premises are inexpensive, compared to the Swedish national average. Västernorrland has the highest export value per worker in Sweden and generates the second-highest gross regional product per inhabitant. The Västernorrland workforce is skilled and dedicated.

Five priority clusters are: cellulose fiber and energy-related industries; advanced information systems and services, such as banking, insurance and pensions;  the manufacturing and processing industry; management of crisis/conflicts and rescue services; and tourism and related activities.
