Östergötland is ideally located in south-east Sweden, close to resources and markets. Two-thirds of the Swedish market is less than one hour away. Access to the Baltic market, with more than 100 million people, is also close.
The region has 415,000 inhabitants and includes 13 municipalities, of which Linköping and Norrköping are the largest. Together, the two neighboring cities represent the fourth-largest urban area in Sweden.
Communications are remarkably well-developed, within the region as well as beyond. There are two international airports, excellent road connections and an efficient rail network. The port of Norrköping is one of the Baltic region’s largest and most modern deep-water harbors.
Östergötland is home to state-of-the-art expertise in the fields of communications technology, electronics, software and aerospace. Other important industries include paper, packaging and logistics. The life science technologies and biomedicine cluster is well established.
Linköping University is a driving force for the entire region. The university is known as an innovator both in education and research. It is the second-largest institution in Sweden regarding student enrolment in engineering and science education.
As to the number of employees in foreign-owned companies, Östergötland is the fourth-most-internationalized region in Sweden. Here you find large international companies as well as small- and medium-sized businesses in new, expansive sectors. The three science parks Mjärdevi, Berzelius and ProNova offer an excellent environment for business development. The thriving business community is characterized by cooperation and networking, which contribute to the entrepreneurial spirit of the region.
