The Göteborg area is experiencing more growth than any other region in Sweden, making it attractive for both Swedish and foreign investment. Currently, the number of foreign-owned companies in the district is nearly1,500.
Among the county’s strongest competence areas are the biotech, pharmaceuticals, IT, environmental development, culture and media, automotive, logistics, foodstuffs, petroleum and finance sectors.
The Göteborg region has a population of 850,000, 500,000 of whom live in the city of Göteborg. Consisting of 13 municipalities, the area stretches over a 300-kilometer radius. Seventy percent of Nordic industrial companies are located within 500 kilometers from Göteborg, as are the three capital cities of Scandinavia: Oslo, Copenhagen and Stockholm.
The port of Göteborg, the largest in Scandinavia, has established a global network of trans-ocean shipping lines, while Landvetter Airport is the major airport in Scandinavia for intercontinental air cargo transport. Together with the road and rail system, they link the Göteborg region and northern Europe to the rest of the world.
The four major universities are Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg University, the IT University at Lindholmen Science Park and Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Göteborg is one of the most attractive cities for university study in all of Sweden. Its total number of students currently exceeds 50,000. There are also several notable national research institutes in the region.
